Mother of Pearl (or mother-of-pearl), also known as nacre, is the organic-inorganic composite material produced by some molluscs as an inner shell layer. This layer protects the inside of their shells from parasites and foreign irritants. It is commonly found in three types of mollusks—pearl oysters, freshwater mussels, and abalone. It is strong, resilient, and iridescent. According to the tenets of feng shui, mother of pearl symbolizes good luck and prosperity. It is often used in mystical work to heighten intuition, pchychic sensitivity, and imagination. It is also believed that mother of pearl offers soothing, motherly protection from negativity.
