This beautiful, banded gemstone gets its deep green color from its source, copper ore. Malachite, a copper carbonate, is an opaque mineral, most commonly found in mass rather than crystalline form. It sometimes combines with azurite, a bright blue copper carbonate, to form the rare bi-colored gem, azurmal. Malachite is best known for its unusual designs, especially the “bullseye”, which is made up of concentric circles. In folklore, the bullseye was used to protect its wearer from evil spirits. As a healing stone its density makes it useful as a tool to absorb negative energy. It serves best over the solar plexis to draw out static or repressed emotions, freeing the flow of energy through the body. The two main sources of malachite are southern Africa and the Ural Mountains of Russia.
