Obsidian is a glassy, silica-rich, volcanic rock with a hardness of 5 to 5.5. It is an amorphous material, meaning that its structure contains no regular geometric pattern. Because it can be easily broken in a controlled manner, leaving a very sharp conchoidal fracture, it has been used for tools and arrowheads since Paleolithic times. Obsidian is most frequently black, however other beautiful varieties include snowflake, mahogany, and rainbow, which displays an array of shimmering colors.
